Canada Made: 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

An all-new Toyota RAV4 is on its way, the most popular small crossover sport utility vehicle sold in North America. Most models for the Canadian and American markets are built at Toyota's plant in Woodstock, Ontario, and will continue that way when the fifth-generation RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid arrive later this year.

A New York Debut

Toyota used the occasion of the 2018 New York International Auto Show to make the global debut of its latest RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid. Beginning with the 2019 model year, the RAV4 family is based on new vehicle architecture that's lighter, but tougher than before. Additional changes include new powertrains, an improved suspension system and a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system for enhanced control.

But that's not all! The 2019 RAV4 will feature the following:

1. Three trims available. Toyota is combining its standard and hybrid models under one model name. You'll find three trims: Limited, Trail and XSE Hybrid. The latter system will feature a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Toyota Hybrid System and will also be the sportiest of the three grades. We don't have fuel economy numbers yet, but we expect some improvement to go along with the added power.

2. You'll want all-wheel drive. Toyota makes the RAV4 in front- and all-wheel drive systems. The latter is especially popular here in Canada where long winters require a vehicle that supplies maximum grip on icy or snow-covered roads when you need it. The new Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive system may be a mouthful, but it does so much. First, it sends 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels or distributes that power between the left and rear wheels as needed. Second, when all-wheel drive isn't needed, the RAV4 behaves like a front-wheel drive model, conserving fuel.

3. Improved tech as you would expect. Technology changes are happening at a rapid-fire pace and Toyota is keeping ahead of the masses. The latest version of Toyota's Entune telematics system is present, delivering Wi-Fi Connect, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa connectivity. The WiFi hotspot feature is especially welcome as it will allow you to connect to the Internet while on the go. This means with the driver concentrating on the road ahead, your passengers can stay connected. Lastly, Qi Wireless Charging is an option that'll make it possible for you to charge your smartphone without the nuisance of a cable.

4. Safety features? Oh, yes! Toyota has long been a leader in safety technology. The 2019 RAV4 doesn't disappoint as the new model will offer the latest version of its Toyota Safety Sense. The TSS-P package includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, radar cruise control, lane departure alert and automatic high beams. The RAV4 also comes with eight airbags.

2019 RAV4 XSE Hybrid

The XSE Hybrid offers standard all-wheel drive and will have its own version of Toyota's 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Toyota pairs this model with an electronic continuously variable automatic transmission.
