You go to start your vehicle, and nothing happens…is it the battery? The Solenoid? The starter? It may be any one of these, but there are some signs you can look for that can assist you in determining which part might need attention.

If your starter looks like it is soaked in oil, more than likely it is close to needing to be replaced. Due to its location at the bottom of the engine, drive train fluid and engine oil often leak down onto the starter. By correcting any leaks, you have and replacing the starter now, you can avoid more expensive repair jobs due to other malfunctions.

The starter will not work without your solenoid. When you turn the key to start your vehicle, the solenoid transmits the electrical current from the battery to the starter motor. The solenoid also allows the flywheel to crank by pushing the starter drive into it. If nothing happens when you turn the key, try jiggling the gear shift level first. An engine that still will not crank after jiggling the transmission gear shift typically has something wrong with the solenoid.
