The braking system in your vehicle connects the pedal to a power booster, which uses either an engine vacuum or hydraulic pump (varies depending on the vehicle) to tranfer force to the master cylinder. This force is then transferred to push brake fluid through the lines to each wheel cylinder, causing the calipers to compress the brake pads onto the rotors, thus slowing the vehicle down. Through continuous or aggressive use, your brake pads, the calipers that hold them, and the rotors will wear down and will eventually need servicing or replacement for them to effectively slow down your vehicle.

When Should You Service Your Brakes

A brake service is required roughly every 80,000 km, depending on your driving habits. You’ll need a brake service as soon as possible if you notice anything out of the ordinary with your brakes, as your brakes are a critical aspect of how your car keeps you safe on the road. Your vehicle should be brought in for service if you notice any squealing noises, a “spongy” feeling or if it seems like your brake pedal isn’t giving as much resistance when pressed down, or there is a indicator light on your dash.
